Summer Reading Program
2. Program Hours: The program meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:45. Teachers and volunteers for the Impact summer reading program should arrive at 10:00 a.m. on the first Monday of your session and 10:15 a.m. during all days of your session. Impact VBS interns and high school helpers at the start of class will deliver your designated group of children to your door. These helpers will receive instructions to stay in the rooms with the children and provide assistance and support. The size of the visiting youth groups vary, but typically, we have one to two helpers in every class. At class end, the Impact VBS interns and high school students will escort the children to their next activity. 3. Reading Groups: We have two VBS programs running concurrently and each will have its own designated reading program. However, the materials and procedures are the same for both. We use colors and symbols to break the students down into appropriately sized classes based on their ages. Red is for Kindergarten, purple is for first graders, green is for second graders, orange is for the third graders, blue is for fourth graders, and yellow is reserved for our fifth graders. 4. Materials: A plastic storage bin or container will have all of your materials needed to teach the curriculum. These boxes contain supplies such as paper, folders, markers, curriculum activities, pens/pencils etc. Upon teacher request, a grade level crate can be delivered to your classroom that consists of extra classroom sets of books for independent or free reading. Please contact a summer reading director to make your request. 5. Curriculum: Each teacher will receive a binder that consists of grade-level curriculum, general information about the program, book rotation, and general resources. Please feel free to adapt, change, or be as creative with the grade level curriculum that you need to be. The grade level curriculum is specifically tailored for volunteers and teachers that want a daily reading curriculum for each day. 6. Rewards and Incentives: The curriculum for K-3rd grade has specific incentives for children that are exhibiting positive and good character. All grades can have rewards and incentives based on the teacher's discretion. VBS has a reward system of offering a child a ticket for positive behavior throughout the day. If you are interested in the VBS reward system, please contact the summer reading director for tickets.
8. Snacks: You are more than welcome to bring snack if you chose to each day for your children, however; by no means are you required or obligated to bring snack for your children. The children do receive lunch after reading class. 9. Thanks! Thank you so much for making a huge impact in our children's lives by teaching them how to read! So many of you volunteer your time and energy, to help Impact children take ownership, be excited, and wanting to be involved in making their learning and education a success! We thank you!
