2004 UMC In NYC A Hit!
by Administrator
The 2004 Urban Ministry Conference (October 20-22) brought
urban workers from around the US together for three days of
information, nourishment, and empowerment. The conference included
worship, key-note presentations, seminars, and networking sessions.
Many people made comments about this year's conference expanding
their horizons. Ray Bakke spoke on urbanization and globalization
and our response in ministry. The churches of Christ have been
a mainly rural movement and our work in cities has been mostly
among the poor and disenfranchised. The concept of globalization
hasn't been much of a focus in the past due to our local focus
in poverty situations, and our ruralistic skepticism of the
city as a place of human corruption. Not only did Ray Bakke
challenge this idea, but having the conference at Manhattan
Church of Christ, one of the oldest and most vibrant city-center
churches in our brotherhood, and exposure to the wide variety
of ministries in NYC, led attendees to broaden their definitions
of urban ministry.
Several of those who came were looking for the next step in
their ministries. Two themes in the conference helped with this
need. First, several experts from the New York area were drawn
in to talk about community development. This training was designed
to help works move to sustainable renewal of their communities.
Second, the focus on broader urban ministry, including some
newer ideas like house church planting, helped leaders consider
the next step in reaching more of the city.
One of the most important aspects of the conference was the
worship times led by Larry Mudd and Pat Pugh. Larry led the
attendees in the post-modern oriented worship common to Manhattan,
while Pat led in the vibrant style of Cincinnati Urban Ministry.
The concentration of both styles was renewal and re-commitment
to place ourselves in the hands of Jesus.
Special thanks to the Manhattan Church of Christ and Iglesia
de Cristo, Mission NYC, Shiloh, and Community of Hope for working
so hard to plan and host this years conference. Most of all
thanks to God for renewing and broadening our vision of him
and his mission to the cities of the world.
Next year's conference will be hosted by Memphis Urban Ministry
(MUM) on October 19-21. The theme for the conference will be
“Partners in the Gospel.”
